Description
Description
The D6000 Series modules are a family of completedata acquisition modules for use in process controlsystems. The analog input models can measureprocess signals such as thermocouples, 4 to 20 mAloops, and discrete contact closures. The analogoutput models can generate voltage or current signalsfor controlling annunciators or valves. The digital inputand output models can sense the state of remotedigital signals or control solid state relays. Completedata acquisition systems can be created with easewith the D6000 modules and a host supervisorycomputer or programmable logic controller. The modules provide direct connection to a widevariety of sensors and annunciators. They performall signal conditioning and linearization and containno pots or DIP switches. All user-selectable settings, such as ranges, communications settings are storedin nonvolatile EEPROM, which maintains these valueseven after power is removed. The D6000 series modules communicate with ahost computer using the MODBUS RTU protocol. The MODBUS RTU protocol is widely recognizedthroughout the data acquisition industry by andsupported by almost all commercially availableprocess control programs and supervisory host PLC’s.
This binary protocol communicates via a two-wireRS485 serial interface. The key to the product conceptis that the modules are easy to connect and use. Youdo not need engineering experience in complicateddata acquisition hardware. With the modules, anyonefamiliar with a personal computer can construct a dataacquisition system. This modular approach to data acquisition is veryflexible, easy to use and cost effective. The modules canbe mixed and matched to fit your application. They canbe placed remote from the host and from each other. The D6000 series is completely hardware compatiblewith the D1000M, D1700M, D3000M and D5000M seriesmodules. Meaning, they can all be mixed and matchedon one RS485 serial communications line. Each moduleis identified by a unique user-programmable address. This addressing technique allows modules to beinterrogated in any order.
ANALOG INPUT MODULES
The D6100 through D6400 Series analog input modulescontain seven input channels and make up a completedata acquisition system. Each unit contains analogsignal conditioning circuits optimized for a specific inputtype. The amplified sensor signals are converted todigital data with a microprocessor-controlled integratingA/D converter. Offset and gain errors in the analogcircuitry are continuously monitored and corrected usingmicroprocessor techniques. The analog input modules output the resultant digitaldata as unsigned integer percentage of full-scale valuesthat are compatible with the MODBUS RTU protocol. The modules continuously convert data at the rate ofup to 25 conversions per second and store the latestresult in a buffer. Host processors may request data bysending a MODBUS query to the module. The D6000series modules will instantly respond by communicatingthe memory buffer data back to the host processor. Upto 247 modules may be linked to a single RS485 port.
ANALOG OUTPUT MODULES
The D6500 analog output modules contain two 12-bitdigital to analog converters (DAC) for generating eithervoltage or current output signals. The output signaltype for each DAC is user selectable and each DAC isindependently controlled via a host computer using theMODBUS RTU protocol. Two voltage and two currentranges are available. The D6500 analog output modules also containprogrammable features such as output slew rate,a communications watchdog timer, programmablestartup signal value, and an 8-bit analog to digitalconverter for analog readback the output signal. Thecommunications watchdog timer can be used to movethe analog output signal to a known “safe” condition inthe event of a communications failure.
DIGITAL INPUT MODULES
The D6710 digital input modules contain 15 individualsignal inputs for monitoring logic levels, contactclosures, or other ON/OFF signals in a data acquisitionsystem. Each discrete input terminal contains a pullupbiasing resistor allowing for direct connection to aset of contacts. The input terminals can accept signalsbetween ±30 Vdc without damage.
DIGITAL OUTPUT MODULESThe D6720 digital output modules contain 15 individualopen-collector transistor outputs for controllingannunciators, lamps, or other devices that require anON/OFF signal. The D6720 digital output modules also containprogrammable features such as a communicationswatchdog timer and programmable startup signalvalues for each bit.The communications watchdog timer can be usedto move the digital output signals to a known “safe”condition in the event of a communications failure.
COMMUNICATIONS
The D6000 series modules are designed toeasily interface with computers and PLC’s. Allcommunications to and from the module areperformed using the Modbus RTU protocol via anRS485 interface. The two-wire RS485 system is a half duplex system, developed for multi-dropped systems that cancommunicate at high data rates over long distances.RS485 receivers can handle common mode voltagesfrom -7 to 12V without loss of data, making them idealfor transmission over great distances.
MODBUS® COMMAND SET
The D6000 series modules use the Modbus RTUprotocol for communications. The Modbus RTUbinary protocol uses a master-slave technique, inwhich only the master device can initiate transactions. The slave devices respond by supplying the requesteddata to the master or by performing the requestedaction in the query. The master can address anyslave device. The returned messages are consideredresponse messages. The supported master functioncodes are:

PROCESS CONTROL SOFTWARE
Modbus RTU protocol is one of the most widelysupported serial protocols in the data acquisitionmarket. Modbus RTU software drivers are availablefor almost every data acquisition software programavailable today. Thus providing instant connectivitybetween the D6000 modules and most dataacquisition software programs.
SETUP
The D6000 series are initiated at the factory usingthe Modbus RTU protocol. Features such as theModbus device address, baud rate, and analogsignal ranges can be easily configured using thesetup software. Each D6000 module must be properlyconfigured before installation into a Modbus system.
UTILITY SOFTWARE
Complimentary Utility Software is included with eachpurchase order. The software is compatible withWindows® operating systems and distributed onCD-ROM. The Utility Software simplifies configurationof all user selectable options such as device address, baud rate and filtering constants. The latest versionof our software is always available on our web site attrodeks.com.
