Description
Using the DPG1000ADA andDPG1000DAR Alarm OutputsNormal (Fail-safe) vs. ReverseAction—The convention for alarmaction is that with the normal orfail-safe configuration, the alarmoutput relays will be CLOSED (relayenergized) for a clear or non-alarmcondition and OPEN (relay notenergized) for an alarm condition. This is primarily for users whorequire an alarm condition ifthe gauge loses power or suffers acatastrophic failure. In the wiringdiagrams, the normally closed andnormally open designations refer tostandard relay terminology (i.e., therelay contact status with the relaycoil not energized). Therefore, with the normal(fail-safe) configuration in a greenor non-alarm condition, the relaywill be energized so that continuitycan be expected between thecommon and normally open leads. In a red or alarm condition, the relaywill be open (not energized) sothat continuity can be expectedbetween the common and normallyclosed leads.
Contact Rating and ProtectionThe contacts of the alarm relaysare rated at 1 A/24 Vdc or 0.5 A/115 Vac. Switching loads greaterthan the rating, or switching largeinductive loads, will shorten theuseful life of the contacts. In lowlevelswitching or with dry contacts, the user should consider whetherexternal contact protection, suchas snubber networks or arcsuppression networks, is requiredto protect the contacts. In addition, no internal fusing isincluded in the DPG1000 contactcircuits. The circuit external to thegauge alarm outputs should befused by the user in applicationsin which good design dictatesthis practice.
Using the DPG1000DARAnalog OutputThe analog output is easy to useif a few system considerations areobserved. The DPG1000DAR is DCpowered, with the gauge powersupply (–) tied to the 4 to 20 mA (–).Therefore, the DC supply (–) leadshould be considered common withregard to the analog output(–) or ground connection in theuser’s system.Be sure to observe the outputcompliance (voltage drive)capabilities of the gauge. Thecompliance, and therefore themaximum loop resistance the outputcan drive, is a function of the supplyvoltage to the gauge. Consult themanual for maximum loopresistance vs. supply voltage. Toolarge a loop resistance will causethe gauge output to “limit”or saturate before reaching its full20 mA output.
