Remote I/O, or distributed I/O, offers severaladvantages over the traditional local I/Ofound on a Programmable Logic Controller(PLC). First, it allows you to locate theI/O modules close to the process that isbeing monitored or controlled. This greatlyimproves noise immunity, as the weaksensor signals are converted to digitalsignals before being transmitted longdistances through a noisy plantenvironment. trodeks universal remoteI/O modules use a simple 2-wire RS485 linkusing MODBUS RTU/ASCII protocol, whichis supported by most programmable logiccontrollers. A second advantage is thatremote I/O greatly reduces the wiring at themain control panel, saving time and moneywhen repairs and upgrades are necessary.Adding additional sensors and controlsignals is as easy as connecting to thealready installed RS485 link and modifyingthe PLC program to utilize the new I/O. Inaddition, remote I/O allows you to expandyour process control system beyond thelocal I/O capabilities of your PLC. You canadd thermocouple, RTD, pressure, and flowsensors to a PLC that doesn’t support thesetypes of inputs. With remote I/O, yourprocess application is no longer dependenton your controller choice.
